Self-Growth is held back by our limiting beliefs. Most of the time we are not even aware that we are limiting ourselves because at the time what we say to ourselves seems to make a lot of sense. We apply words to these beliefs and they become our reality about ourselves and our life. It is only when we become self-aware that there are other ways of seeing situations that we continue to grow.
One of my favorite quotes is by the poet ee cummings "It takes courage to grow into who you really are". I am convinced that we always know when we are not living into who we really are. There is inside us a nagging voice that encourages us to grow.
When we challenge our limiting beliefs by disciplining ourselves to make changes we grow out of our familiar comfort zone. Here is an example of a man and his wife who both challenged limiting beliefs. Howard was a hard capable worker but not very engaged with his wife and children. She had for a long time made excuses to the children that their father and to herself that he was a very busy man. After some years went by she admitted to herself that she did not like being married and feeling like a single mom. She told Howard that she could not continue to live like that and if he wanted to be with her and the children he had to make some changes. This scared Howard and challenged his belief that because he worked hard he deserved to be left alone when he came home.
When Howard thought about his life he realized that his wife was right and admitted that he had begun to unwind by drinking too much.
As long as Howard and his wife did not challenge the status quo they were held back by their limiting beliefs. Self-growth begun when the balance was challenged with the result of introducing change.
Limiting beliefs hold us back from self-growth. It is by challenging our beliefs and introducing change that we put ourselves on the path of discovering who we are capable of becoming.
